Muhaddithul ‘Asr, ‘Allamah Muhammad Yusuf Binnoriy (rahimahullah) once wrote:
A sad incident occurred at the [Islamic] University of Bhawalpur, as reported in the Jang newspaper on March 12, 1970:
The Governor of West Pakistan visited Jamiah Islamiyyah [Bhawalpur] and, upon observing many students without beards, asked in surprise, “Why don’t you have beards?”
The university Dean immediately said: “Islam is not in the beard”.
It is deeply regrettable that while the Governor respects the beard and expects students pursuing Islamic knowledge to reflect Islamic teachings in their appearance and character, the Dean of the University dares to mock religion with such courage?
If he simply said that Islam is not just about beards, then the matter would have been less serious, since it would suggest: ‘who can fulfil all the requirements of religion?’
In any case, during these times of Fitnah, it is no longer uncommon for there to be no harmony between knowledge and practice.
While sacred knowledge is inherited from the Prophets, the outer appearance and conduct [of its seekers] is of Wilson or Lenin.
In any case, this incident should serve as an admonition.
It’s been a while since the general public have largely abandoned this hallmark of the Prophets and righteous people of the Ummah [i.e., the beard], except for those whom Allah wishes. Sadly, now it seems, even the heirs of the Prophetic legacy are following this trend. Inna lillah!
رحم الله الامة للرشاد وجنبهم عن الزيغ والالحاد
May Allah Ta’ala have mercy on the Ummah and guide it to righteousness,
and protect it from deviation and atheism.

جامعہ بہاول پور میں ایک افسوسناک واقعہ پیش آیا ہے، ۱۲ مارچ ۷۰ء کے جنگ میں ایک خبر شائع ہوئی ہے کہ:
گورنر مغربی پاکستان جامعہ اسلامیہ میں تشریف لے گئے اور بہت سے طلبہ کو بے ریش دیکھ کر حیرت سے پوچھا کہ آپ لوگوں کی داڑھیاں کیوں نہیں۔
رئیس الجامعہ نے فورا کہا کہ اسلام داڑھی میں نہیں ہے۔
انتہائی افسوس کا مقام ہے کہ گورنر صاحب تو داڑھی کا احترام کریں اور علم دین حاصل کرنے والے طلبہ سے توقع رکھیں کہ ان کی صورت و سیرت اسلامی تعلیمات کا آئینہ ہوگی لیکن جامعہ کے ڈین صاحب اس جرءت کے ساتھ دین کا تمسخر اڑا ئیں ؟ کاش یہ کہتے کہ اسلام صرف داڑھی میں نہیں تو معاملہ آسان ہوتا کہ ہم مقصر ہیں دین کے تقاضے کون پورے کر سکتا ہے؟ بہر حال ان فتنوں کے دور میں یہ بات زیادہ عجیب نہیں کہ علم و عمل کا تطابق نہ ہو، علوم تو انبیاء کے حاصل کریں اور شکل وصورت ولسن یالین کی ہو۔ بہر حال یہ واقعہ اپنے پہلو میں عبرت کے بہت سے پہلو لئے ہوئے ہے، گو یا اب یہ دور آ گیا کہ عوام یا غیر علماء تو انبیاء وصالحین امت کے اس شعار کو مدت ہوئی عموما ترک کر ہی چکے تھے الا ماشاء اللہ ،مگر اب جانشین مسند نبوت بھی ان کے پیچھے جا رہے ہیں ۔ انا للہ!
